Minimum total weighted completion time: Faster approximation schemes

چکیده
We study classic scheduling problems on uniformly related machines. Efficient polynomial time approximation schemes (EPTAS’s) are fast and practical approximation schemes. New methods and techniques are essential in developing such improved approximation schemes, and their design is a primary goal of this research agenda. We present EPTAS’s for the scheduling problem of a set of jobs on uniformly related machines so as to minimize the total weighted completion time, both for the case with release dates and its special case without release dates. These problems are NP-hard in the strong sense, and therefore EPTAS’s are the best possible approximation schemes unless P=NP. Previously, only PTAS’s were known for these two problems, while an EPTAS was known only for the special case of identical machines without release dates.

Polynomial time approximation schemes for the traveling repairman and other minimum latency problems
We give a polynomial time, (1+ )-approximation algorithm for the traveling repairman problem (TRP) in the Euclidean plane, on weighted planar graphs, and on weighted trees. This improves on the known quasi-polynomial time approximation schemes for these problems. The algorithm is based on a simple technique that reduces the TRP to what we call the segmented TSP. Here, we are given numbers l1, ....
متن کاملApproximation schemes for minimizing total (weighted) completion time with release dates on a batch machine
A batch machine is a machine that can process a number of jobs simultaneously as a batch, and the processing time of a batch is equal to the longest processing time of the jobs assigned to it. In this paper we present a polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for scheduling a batch machine to minimize the total completion time with job release dates. Also, we present a fully polynomial time...
متن کاملMove-Optimal Schedules for Parallel Machines to Minimize Total Weighted Completion Time
We study the minimum total weighted completion time problem P | | wjCj , which is known to be stronglyNP-hard. We analyze a simple local search heuristic, moving jobs from one machine to another. The local optima can be shown to be approximately optimal with approximation ratio 32 . In case all jobs have equal weight to processing time ratios, the approximation ratio is at most 3 2 − 1 6 .
متن کاملMinimum Weighted Completion Time ( 1999
The minimum weighted completion time problem involves (i) a set J of n jobs, a positive weight wj for each job j ∈ J , and a release date rj before which it cannot be scheduled; (ii) a set of m machines, each of which can process at most one job at any time, and (iii) an arbitrary set of positive values {pi,j}, where pi,j denotes the time to process job j on machine i. A schedule involves assig...
متن کاملApproximation Schemes for Minimum 2-Connected Spanning Subgraphs in Weighted Planar Graphs
We present new approximation schemes for various classical problems of finding the minimum-weight spanning subgraph in edgeweighted undirected planar graphs that are resistant to edge or vertex removal. We first give a PTAS for the problem of finding minimum-weight 2-edge-connected spanning subgraphs where duplicate edges are allowed. Then we present a new greedy spanner construction for edge-w...
